It only took us four years!

For two fairly intelligent people you would think that WE would have thought about this years ago.

We got Skype!

This is a classic case of desperation. With Reef in South Africa and my teaching this semester this will be the longest period away from each other in four years.

I can see her!Woohoo! Pictures, Images and Photos

I can see myself!

She CAN'T see me!Oops Pictures, Images and Photos

Some stupid little thing is wrong and when I discover it I will probably laugh my head off. In the meantime, this is frustrating!Hair pulling Pictures, Images and Photos

It is wonderful to see her.

She showed me one of the cats who was ill when I was last there. All white, fluffy and fat!

Reef says,"just like me."

Seems like we are both eating our way into oblivion!Yummy Pictures, Images and Photos

Long distance relationships are more than difficult. They are life altering, more so than living even 50 miles apart.

The POND is the POND!

And that is pretty much the problem. crying Pictures, Images and Photos

While we are still apart we will avail ourselves of modern technology. Computer Smiley Pictures, Images and Photos

Something, for which, on this snowing Sunday morning, I am most grateful.

Response

Why I choose to post or not post my name is of no import.

Of course it is. A person who is proud of their view honorably backs it up.

Why do you not publish my post and the links to rational folks who have different opinions? Are you afraid of an actual discussion?

Look at it this way. It costs between $30,000 and $50,000 just to run the race. The winner is about the only person likely to recover those costs. Most of the costs are tied up in the dogs. Why would anyone with that kind of cash invested in an animal abuse it?

Now therein lays the ENTIRE issue. Why would you mention money? Because THAT is your real issue.

I had not even brought up the subject.

Something else to think about; you cannot MAKE a sled dog run. The dogs and the musher are a team who work together. A musher who abuses his/her dogs CANNOT win.

You’re kidding right? During the holocaust, human beings were tied together and when they were told to go-they went. Hell, if you put a chain around ME and attached me to others and said, “mush,” do you really think I would push my paws into the mud and say “woof-no, I’m not gonna”?

Have you ever seen a dog stand up and say, “gee not today folks,” then take the collar off and walk away
?

There are NO doctors on the trail, only vets. Why is that? More abuse?

I cannot speak for them. Perhaps some are desperate to help. Others are, like yourself, invested in some way. However, not in the love or health of the dogs.

I'd dead serious, you need to get to a race and watch these magnificent animals. They do what they do because it's what they do.

Of course they do, they have no choice!

So come on, take a chance, let the 'evil' side have some time on your conversation.

There, you’ve had you’re say.

Goodbye for now!

He's back! -Continuation of rationale for Iditarod

I thought that I would put this is a blog form to allow both the writer's view and my own as much exposure as possible.

The following is this person's response to me re the maltreatment of Iditarod dogs
.

Missing Africa

Photobucket

Reef is home in Africa. I am jealous. Might as well say it out loud. We have a beautiful bedroom there. It was decorated specifically for us. I miss it's opulence, the glory of waking in the heat of the African sun, it's sparkle on the pool's surface.

It's intensity on the skin is telling. You know, you feel it's power.

Ah! Africa!

I miss the property which I call the compound. It is an artsy house with rambling rooms full of antiques, paintings and all sorts of beauty. Reef told me that some of the rooms have been renovated.

Her son is the genius behind it's beauty. He is the epitome of creativity.

I would have liked to have seen him.

Gee, I wish I could have gone this time around.

I miss Reef who told me that our big bed feels empty without me.

Maltreatment of Iditarod dogs

Photobucket

It is time for the Iditarod. Do you OWN a dog? Well if you have read this far you probably love that creature like your child. You are not a fan of this inhumane race. Or, perhaps you are simply uneducated.

Dogs that are used in this race are not loved, they are used and abused and then either left to die or killed. It is quite amazing to read stories of the drivers and their problems while riding through the snow.

You do not hear of the constant pain and torture that these dogs endure.

http://www.helpsleddogs.org/

Please send protest emails and forward this alert widely.

Please help end the barbaric treatment of dogs by sending protest emails to organizations that support the Iditarod. What happens to the dogs during the Iditarod includes death, paralysis, frostbite (where it hurts the most!), bleeding ulcers, bloody diarrhea, lung damage, pneumonia, ruptured discs, viral diseases, broken bones, torn muscles and tendons and sprains.

Dog beatings and whippings are common. During the 2007 Iditarod, eyewitnesses reported that musher Ramy Brooks kicked, punched and beat his dogs with a ski pole and a chain. Jim Welch says in his book Speed Mushing Manual, "A training device such as a whip is not cruel at all but is effective." "It is a common training device in use among dog mushers..."

Iditarod dog kennels are puppy mills. Mushers breed large numbers of dogs and routinely kill unwanted ones, including puppies. Many dogs who are permanently disabled in the Iditarod, or who are unwanted for any reason are killed with a shot to the head, dragged, drowned or clubbed to death.

When they're not hauling people, most Iditarod dogs are forced to live at the end of a chain. It has been reported that dogs who don't make the main team are never taken off-chain. Chained dogs have been attacked by wolves, bears and other animals. Old and arthritic dogs suffer terrible pain in the blistering cold.

Most Internet service providers allow people to send up to 40 email addresses at a time. For your convenience, the addresses have been divided into groups of 40. Please email the first group first. Individual email addresses are given under the sample letter. The groups contain addresses for the Iditarod sponsors, promoters, and the sponsors of the 73 mushers who signed up for the 2009 Iditarod. Email blocks with semicolons are on

SAMPLE LETTER (Please personalize the letter.):

Dear Iditarod Supporter:

Please end your organization's support of the Iditarod dog sled race. For the dogs, this event is a bottomless pit of suffering. At least 136 dogs have died in the race. No one knows how many dogs die after this tortuous ordeal or during training. For more facts about the Iditarod, visit the Sled Dog Action Coalition website.

On average, 53 percent of the dogs who start the race do not make it across the finish line. According to a report published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, of those who do finish, 81 percent have lung damage. A report published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine said that 61 percent of the dogs who complete the Iditarod have ulcers versus zero percent pre-race.

Iditarod dog kennels are puppy mills. Mushers breed large numbers of dogs and routinely kill unwanted ones, including puppies. Many dogs who are permanently disabled in the Iditarod, or who are unwanted for any reason, including those who have outlived their usefulness, are killed with a shot to the head, dragged, drowned or clubbed to death. "Dogs are clubbed with baseball bats and if they don't pull are dragged to death in harnesses....." wrote former Iditarod dog handler Mike Cranford in an article for Alaska's Bush Blade Newspaper.

Dog beatings and whippings are common. During the 2007 Iditarod, eyewitnesses reported that musher Ramy Brooks kicked, punched and beat his dogs with a ski pole and a chain. Jim Welch says in his book Speed Mushing Manual, "Nagging a dog team is cruel and ineffective...A training device such as a whip is not cruel at all but is effective." "It is a common training device in use among dog mushers..."

Jon Saraceno wrote in his March 3, 2000 column in USA Today, "He [Colonel Tom Classen] confirmed dog beatings and far worse. Like starving dogs to maintain their most advantageous racing weight. Skinning them to make mittens. Or dragging them to their death."

During the race, veterinarians do not give the dogs physical exams at every checkpoint. Mushers speed through many checkpoints, so the dogs get the briefest visual checks, if that. Instead of pulling sick dogs from the race, veterinarians frequently give them massive doses of antibiotics to keep them running.

Most Iditarod dogs are forced to live at the end of a chain when they aren't hauling people around. It has been reported that dogs who don't make the main team are never taken off-chain. Chained dogs have been attacked by wolves, bears and other animals. Old and arthritic dogs suffer terrible pain in the blistering cold.

Please end your organization's association with this horrific race.

Sincerely,

Go From Me

Go from me. Yet I feel that I shall stand
Henceforward in thy shadow. Nevermore
Alone upon the threshold of my door
Of individual life, I shall command
The uses of my soul, nor lift my hand
Serenely in the sunshine as before,
Without the sense of that which I forbore—
Thy touch upon the palm. The widest land
Doom takes to part us, leaves thy heart in mine
With pulses that beat double. What I do
And what I dream include thee, as the wine
Must taste of its own grapes. And when I sue
God for myself, He hears that name of thine,
And sees within my eyes the tears of two

re yesterday's cats

Some people claim that we humans are exceptional because we have language. What they really mean is that we are entitled to do what we wish with the natural world and everyone else who lives in it because we have our language.

Perhaps, you've read one of the many books about the communication of sentient nonhumans (or at least that features it), such as those by Jeffrey Masson or Mark Bekoff or Jonathan Balcombe.

Other species are communicating--through verbalization--just fine; we simply haven't figured out exactly what they're saying to each other. Anyone with a cat or dog knows how hard they try to get us to understand their language, and they do achieve some level of success. They clearly have awareness of wanting something or having a need and setting out to tell us what that is so we may be of service (for example).

However, there are people who still believe that what nonhumans do is really some kind of involuntary articulation or vocalization, and for them I suggest that they watch yesterdays posted talking cats Youtube.

Milk

I saw MILK today. You should see it.

The most fundamental issue regarding other’s belief about homosexuality is that it is a choice.

In some cases, it becomes a choice after acknowledging one’s orientation post marriage and children. There are other scenarios, we know them all. However, that is not the gist of this blog.

Choice! That is the argument. Would you like to play a role in putting an end to this erroneous belief? I believe that a compendium of a great many histories would at least add to the literature on our behalf.

The age of reason, according to Canon Law, is the guideline that I am using for my study. The age of reason, also called the age of discretion, is the age at which children become capable of moral responsibility. On completion of the seventh year a minor is presumed to have the use of reason (canon 97 §2 of the Code of Canon Law). Children under the age of reason and the mentally handicapped are sometimes called "innocents" because of their inability to commit sins: even if their actions are considered objectively sinful.

It would be appreciated if you, your girlfriends and gay men friends would contribute to this endeavor.

The guidelines:

To be submitted only by those men and women who can attest to the fact that their homosexuality was evident to them before and up to the age of seven.

Incidents, such as proclivities, such as a male friend of mine who said that while his brother was playing cops and robberies he was begging his mother to allow him to fold the laundry and polish the furniture: Sorry for the stereotypical example. My own partner said that she never fought the girls she only took on the boys and always won. She was eight! Of great importance is the sexual thrust for the same sex at such a young age. Please take note however, that it is not just the sexual attraction which is being considered.

Family recognition which resulted in repudiation, acceptance or ignoring the child’s orientation. In addition, examples of such and the direct effect of these attitudes upon the child and the direction she/he took in life.

Any personal factors that would shed light on the individual’s journey.

The purpose is obvious. If the naysayers are able to read a compendium of documented studies written by the gay community in their own words it might help them toward a better understanding of our community. However, we need a substantial number of histories.

The personal account should be under 1,000 words.

I will tell those who do not know of me that I am a senior citizen who would like to contribute something of value. The work is probably not beyond me as I am a writer, I have been a psychotherapist for over twenty five years and a teacher of psychology on the college level for the same length of time.

I am pretty sure I knew I was gay before seven. I went on to marry and have children. Sorry this ended up being about me-but it is, and a million others like me.

Please feel free to advertise this endeavor on your own blogs. Also, any suggestions would be happily accepted.

Thanks,

BRING IT ON!
